When HBO announced yesterday that Vince Vaughn will co-star alongside Colin Farrell in the newest season of True Detective, naturally, we were a little disappointed. Considering that there were several casting rumours going around this summer, we just felt the hype would have been warranted. That said though, they are the only two stars linked to the project so far.
Directed by Justin Lin, the second season will surround “three police officers and a career criminal [who] must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.” Colin Farrell will reportedly play a character named Ray Velcoro, “a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn.” Vaughn, on the other hand, will be career criminal Frank Semyon, who is in “danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.”
With more announcements to be made well ahead of the series’ second season, there are talks that the show is looking to cast a no-nonsense female sheriff. So far, actresses rumoured to have been invited to read for the show include Jessica Chastain, Elisabeth Moss, Rosario Dawson, Brit Marling, Kelly Reilly, Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Abigail Spencer, Oona Chaplin and Jaimie Alexander.
However, we believe that the five rumoured ladies below would DEFINITELY give the show the OOMPH it deserves:
Jessica Chastain

Rumours of Jessica Chastain’s casting went viral earlier this year, and it makes sense why she would have been considered. While she has since confirmed that she WON’T be in the series, it’s no secret that Jessica is a SERIOUS actress. After all, she’s Julliard-trained and is already a two-time Oscar nominee. Whether she’s working on a period piece or becomes the ditzy woman with good intentions, this woman can play anything. And if you’ve ever caught her turn as a hardened C.I.A. agent trying to hunt down Osama bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty, you’d know that she’d make one really badass detective.
Brit Marling

Having starring in films like Another Earth, The East and The Sound Of My Voice, Brit’s a darling in the indie world. She’s also not a stranger to playing dark and mysterious characters, having played a cult leader in the latter film. While she may not be as well known as some of the other names being passed around, casting directors should take note of her talent. Because if reviews for her latest film The Keeping Room (which premiered at TIFF) are any indication of what kind of performer she is, then True Detective could very well be her biggest break.
Rachel McAdams

If there’s an actress who’s in need of a standout role, it’s Rachel McAdams. In fact, her name was tossed around as a potential candidate to take on the series’ female lead role earlier this month.
While she might be a staple in rom-coms and time-traveling movies (she’s already been in two!), I believe that she has the range to do it all. If you want to see her in a thriller, I highly recommend Red Eye. Besides, we already know she can deliver the sass. After all, Mean Girls’ Regina George arguably remains her most popular character to date.
Elisabeth Moss

In addition to Rachel, there were also some reports that mentioned the possibility of Elizabeth Moss. With Mad Men coming to a close in 2015, Moss would be a great choice. She has been nominated six times for a Primetime Emmy but without a single win. Her top-notch performances in Top Of The Lake and Mad Men came up short each time, so True Detective could possibly and FINALLY give her the recognition she deserves.
Rosario Dawson

When I think of Rosario Dawson, all I can think about is HOW DAMN COOL she is. While I’ll admit that she hasn’t done many awards-bait roles, she’s proven time and time again how versatile she can be. From singing in Rent to playing dark characters in films like Sin City, True Detective could very well be the role that gives her the attention that she deserves.
Honourable Mentions
Although the above list of ladies are all great choices, we DID notice that it lacked diversity. So in an attempt to throw other talented actresses into the mix, we’d be really interested in seeing ladies like Lucy Liu, Kerry Washington, Lupita Nyong’o, Zoe Saldana and Sandra Oh considered as well.
*Sigh*
We can dream, right?
